EDITOR’S LETTER I n Washington, D.C., which is where I call home, spring has arrived in all its cherry blossom–infused beauty. I love spring, and not just because it means warmer and longer days are upon us, but also for the sense of renewal and regrowth it brings. Springtime inspires me to try something new or take up a skill or hobby I already enjoy. Which is why I love our “Class Act” story in this issue of JWM magazine. It reminds us that it’s never too late to pursue a dream, embark on a new adventure or simply take a class to make life more interesting. For me, it’s all about cooking. While some people see a vacation as a holiday from the kitchen, I see a chef-led cooking class as a chance to hone my skills or appreciate a new cuisine. Learning is life-long, and I truly believe the more we learn, the more we live. Perhaps my next cooking class will reveal the secrets of creating delicious sushi, one of my favorite foods. Health experts extol the benefits of diets rich in fish, just as environmentalists warn us about the perils of overfishing some of the more periled sea species. What’s a fish lover to do? We report on this complex dilemma, along with sustainable solutions for keeping the earth’s fish population, as well as ourselves, healthy. From the sea to the beaches (check out our must-have essentials for the best-stocked beach bag) to the highest peaks, JWM wouldn’t be complete without taking you to some of the world’s most beautiful and intriguing cities. Discover the business and pleasure of travel in Beijing, China, a city whose history as well as its dramatic modernization has intrigued me over the course of my visits. In this issue we also travel to Cusco, Peru, home to the new JW MARRIOTT CUSCO. Well known as the gateway to Machu Picchu, the city is probably lesser known for its vibrant arts scene inspired by the region’s rich In this issue, we travel to Cusco, Peru, home to the new JW Marriott Cusco, a hotel designed to celebrate the historical site it was constructed around. Inca history. My own art-filled moment in Peru happened several years ago. A five-day hiking trip led us to an Andean mountain bluff where we set up camp for the night. As night fell, a pitch-black sky was illuminated by millions of stars, some shooting across the sky. One can only imagine that it was a moment like this that inspired Vincent Van Gogh to visualize his masterpiece Starry Night. And it’s moments like these that make me appreciate my ability to travel the world, uncover new experiences and keep on learning. Always learning.
