H&FJ Didot honors Firmin Didot, the 18th century French Neoclassical printer who created the first Modern typefaces. Type foundry Hoefler & Frere-Jones designed H&FJ Didot in 1991 for the reinvention of Harper’s Bazaar. The magazine’s art directors asked for a versatile Modern typeface, one with hairline serifs and a high contrast between thick and thin strokes. Using Didot’s work as their inspiration, along with their own ingenuity, the designers returned with H&FJ Didot, a family of 42 fonts, with a range of weights and many characters Didot never created.
Guest Font Kate Meyers
Kate Meyers (“Player’s Paradise,” page 54) is a freelance writer raising two teenagers outside of Boulder, Colorado, which explains why she has no time to work on her golf game. She writes about amazing people, cool places, healthy living and survivorship for Parade, Cooking Light, Ladies’ Home Journal, ESPN Magazine and Livestrong. Her musings on life and motherhood can be found at iamminivan.com. MY SIMPLE LUXURY: Cocktail hour, perfect light and my family surrounding me on the sand in Beach Haven, N.J.
DIDOT
H&FJ Didot remains part of Harper’s Bazaar today, and the American Society of Magazine Editors has called the typeface part of “one of the most dramatic magazine reinventions in history.”
Bruce Schoenfeld
The wine and spirits editor for Travel + Leisure and business travel columnist for Entrepreneur, Bruce Schoenfeld (“Melting Pot,” page 62) has been writing about his passions for three decades. His work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Food & Wine and more. He has two Emmy Awards for television writing, and lives with his family in Colorado. Follow him on Twitter: @bruceschoenfeld. MY SIMPLE LUXURY: Internet radio. I grew up trying to pull in distant stations on AM and shortwave bands, so getting perfect reception of radio broadcasts from around the world is amazing to me—and especially in a hotel room.
