editor’s letter t’s a history lesson taught to American schoolchildren: Boston colonists, having grown weary of paying an exorbitant tax on imported English tea, dumped three shiploads of it into the Boston Harbor in an act of civil disobedience. Was the Boston Tea Party, as the protest forever became known, the catalyst for making coffee the brew of choice for the American caffeine fix? Perhaps. But 240 years later, tea is making a strong comeback. I was intrigued by this issue’s primer on how to shop like a local when consuming tea, particularly since tea is favored by a growing number of JW Marriott guests who recognize its healthy benefits and is a signature service that our hotels provide. It got me thinking about the ritual that surrounds the preparation and consumption of tea, as at the JW Marriott CusCo in Peru, where guests are encouraged to connect to the Andean experience by participating in a special coca tea ceremony and sipping the curative brew to help alleviate altitude sickness. Having been there, I can attest that it works. Plus, what better way to relax than with a hot cup of tea? Some might argue that there’s nothing more relaxing than time spent on a golf course, with a soft breeze blowing and the I beautiful natural surroundings. I don’t profess to be an avid golfer, but I do like to play, especially when I can enjoy a tranquil day on the greens with my family. In our story “Player’s Paradise,” we tee up some of JW Marriott’s world-class golf courses, along with insider tips on how to conquer their indomitable fairways. We also share other ways to relax by de-cluttering our worlds. Based on advice from JW expert Keri Glassman, this article examines how the clutter in our environments—from workspaces to refrigerators—can impact health and well-being. Upon arrival, guests of the JW Marriott Cusco in Peru are welcomed with a hot cup of coca tea, expertly prepared and presented in a time-honored ceremony. Coincidence or not, the focus on well-being within the pages of this first issue of JWM in 2013 reminds me how fortunate I am to helm a magazine that so expertly touches on so many of our JW Marriott guests’ passion points. With that, I wish all of you a wonderfully healthy and adventurous new year as you embark on your travels near and far.
