essentials [ playlist] actor on Board Willie Garson offers up the songs that sustain him on those long cross-country flights home. T his is my 18th year in a row on a television series," says actor willie Garson. many of those years have been spent in New York: as Stanford Blatch, carrie Bradshaw's gay best friend on HBo's Sex and the City, and now mozzie, Neal caffrey's criminal best friend on USa's White Collar. But his greatest role came five years ago when he adopted his son Nathen. "if i have two nights off, i fly home." to Los angeles. His playlist helps him on the long commute, with a combination of old favorites and young influences. Ennio MoRRiConE, "the MIssIon: orIgInal soundtrack FroM the MotIon PIcture" This is music for the rain forest basically. It's fantastic. Put it on if you want to relax and drift off to sleep, with the help of a good half bottle of Ambien. Badly dRawn Boy, "the shInIng" I love this: It has a really good melody, a lot of changes throughout the song, his voice is interesting and he plays all the instruments. thE FugEEs, "kIllIng Me soFtlY" Elvis CostEllo and thE Roots, "I Want You," livE This version is unbelievable. You feel like you're at a concert, which is a great feeling when you're traveling. One of my dearest friends is Elvis Costello. We speak daily, and yet I still need to listen to him almost every day. They just put this song online, and it is insanity. I've seen him sing it maybe a hundred times, but this one takes the biscuit as they say. Mostly what I end up listening to is Nathen's playlist, because it reminds me of Nathen. We used to sing this in the car, and then when he was at camp, he wrote me that he sang it to JaMEs tayloR, "sWeet BaBY JaMes" J WM MAGAZINE 35 j w m a r r i o t t. c o m himself the night before, to fall asleep. Since then, I could listen to that all day. CREEdEnCE ClEaRwatER REvival, "cotton FIelds" When I adopted Nathen, this was a song that he knew. He was 7 and a half when he moved in. I guess someone in one of his foster houses had played this song all the time. So if I hear that song, I'm only thinking about Nathen. BRuCE spRingstEEn, neBraska alBuM I grew up in New Jersey. Usually when I travel back East, I'm thinking about New Jersey, so I could listen to "Thunder Road" all the time. I also love all the songs on this album: "Johnny 99," "Used Cars," "Atlantic City." What's great about Bruce Springsteen is that he's a storyteller. Hearing a song of his, you feel almost that you've read a short story, and I find that very relaxing, because then I don't have to actually read. - Lisa Rosen http://www.JWMARRIOTT.COM
