court reporting ■ By Heather Estudillo, MADD National Victim Services Specialist News From Courts Nationwide Child EndangErmEnt ■ FLORIDA— A 34-year-old woman was arrested for child abuse, battery on a police officer, DUI, possession of marijuana, refusing a DUI test, resisting arrest, resisting citation, hit and run, and smuggling contraband into a detention facility. Police watched the woman crash into the rear of another vehicle, injuring those inside. The woman tried to flee the scene and was eventually pulled over about a halfmile away. She allegedly admitted to drinking; however, she refused a test and kicked one officer in the leg. Police noticed that her 7-year-old child was in the back seat of the vehicle. The child also allegedly told officers that she had been alone in the car for a long period of time while her mother was in a hotel with friends. ■ OHIO—Police stopped a 23-year-old woman going 80 mph on the wrong side of the highway. They found her 21-month-old toddler in the back seat, along with cocaine. Her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was .185. She was charged with drunk driving, child endangerment, possession of cocaine and speeding. Her son was placed into the custody of Children Services. ■ SOUTH CAROLINA—A 49-year-old mother is being charged with DUI first offense after she was arrested by officers for failing field sobriety tests and registering a BAC of .23. Police responded to a report of a minor traffic crash in the school pickup lane at the middle school where she was picking up her child. When officers asked to see her driver’s license, she reportedly fumbled around for it, thought she had it and presented her credit card instead. drug-impairEd driving ■ CONNECTICUT—Charges of first-degree manslaughter, sale of hallucinogenic drugs, reckless driving, and driving under the influence were brought against a 33-year-old woman after she caused the death of an 8-year-old boy. The woman, high on PCP, drove through a backyard, hit a basketball hoop while going the wrong direction, and hit the boy, who was a pedestrian. She entered a plea of nolo contendere and was sentenced to 25 years, with the sentence suspended after 14 years in prison and five years of probation. ■ OHIO—A 23-year-old man under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and cocaine caused a crash that killed four teens. The offender was sentenced to 24 years in prison and fined $1,000, and his driver’s license was suspended for three years. 6 ■ MADDvocate | summer 2009
