University of Maryland Medical Center.
Living our mission, "To improve the
health of our community through
superior, compassionate care and
medical education in partnership
with our physicians and employees,"
is something University of Maryland
Medical Center Midtown Campus
takes very seriously. Our dedication
to the community we serve extends
past the walls of our hospital into
the parks, organizations, churches
and businesses. Our clinicians often
participate in neighborhood events
on weekends and weeknights to help
improve the health of the community
by offering risk assessments, health
screenings and "Ask a Doc" services.
WE SPEAK TO YOU
If you are a member of a large
community organization or
church and would like for us to
come and speak on a topic, call

Williams offers information on healthy
portions to children at the Day of Hope
event this past August at Robert C.
Marshall Park in West Baltimore.
New Year, New You
Maybe it's those extra holiday pounds
or the idea of another year passing,
but for many people, winter serves
as a time of reflection on how to live
a healthier life. Whatever the reason,
it's never too late to start making
positive changes, and a great way
to get started is to visit your doctor
for a checkup.
The doctor will assess your
overall well-being by asking you
general questions, measuring your
blood pressure and checking your
weight. Use this time to talk about
what you'd like to achieve. Maybe
you're trying to quit smoking or lose
weight? Your doctor can help you
set realistic goals.
Here are two tips from our experts.
Brian Belgin, DPM,
podiatrist, University
of Maryland Medical Center Midtown
Campus:
"Know your
own body. Your feet
are the base for your entire upright
existence, so make a point to examine them daily. Minor changes such as
redness, irritation or calluses could be
a sign of problems. If you have these
signs or pain in your feet that lasts for
two or more days-even with rest, ice
and simple over-the-counter cushions
and anti-inflammatories-you should
see a podiatrist."
To schedule an appointment with
Dr. Belgin, call 410-462-5420.

William C. Gray,
MD, otorhinolaryngologist, UMMC
Midtown Campus:
"It may be hard
to tell the difference
between a cold and
a sinus infection. For a cold, the
symptoms begin in one to five days
and can last seven days, with perhaps
a few lingering symptoms for another
week. If it lasts longer, it could be a
sinus infection or chronic sinusitis. To
keep sinuses clear, drink lots of fluids
to keep nasal discharge thin, and use
a humidifier, particularly if air in your
home is heated by a forced-air system."

Dr. Gray, call 443-552-2653.
