A HEALTHY START MEDICS ON A MISSION Baltimore area vascular surgeon Wayne Reichman, MD, retired last year to seek new horizons and to volunteer his surgical talent where medical care is scarce. “I settled on Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, where the Jacmel, Haiti’s new hospital average rural life expectancy is 58 years and people live on $2 a day.” Dr. Reichman, now the director for the Vascular Surgery Program of the Community Coalition for Haiti, travels to Jacmel, Haiti, several times a year. In October he will be taking a medical team from University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center with him, including Gail Cunningham, MD, chief medical officer; Terry Dyer, NP; anesthesiologists Jean Max-Hogarth, MD, and Kevin Stierer, MD; and Missy Schroeder, CST. Thanks to a generous UM St. Joseph Medical Center equipment donation, Jacmel’s small, new hospital will soon open its third operating room, featuring interventional equipment—a ﬁrst in the area.
