Walk with Me Navigating your palliative health care options P alliative care is a medical specialty focused on improving the quality of life for people facing serious illness. Emphasis is placed on pain and symptom management, communication and coordinated care. It can complement active treat- ment for diseases like cancer, and make a huge difference in quality of life by addressing painful symptoms. Historically, the term palliative care has been used synonymously with hospice care, and there continues to be some confusion between the two terms. Gary Bosley, 59, discovered palliative care thanks to his wife, who is a nurse. Fighting prostate cancer and its complications from metastasis for more than six years, Gary deals with a lot of symptoms and pain that affect his energy, prevent him from getting peaceful, healing sleep, and even weaken his teeth.
