SPOTLIGHT: The Difference Is Academic University of Maryland hospitals help forge the future of health care T he University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in Baltimore is an academic medical center, or "teaching hospital," because all of its physicians are faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, one of the nation's top medical schools and research institutions. UMMC is on a downtown campus that includes buildings for conducting scientific research and educating students in the UM Baltimore Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Dentistry and Law. If you're injured or diagnosed with a disease, your care would likely start at a nearby community hospital; if the injury is severe or the disease becomes more complex, you may be transferred to an academic medical center for advanced care.
