COVER LINKS FEATURED Q&A CONNECTIONS SPOTLIGHT STRENGTH THROUGH TRADITIONS Making Us Proud After experiencing one full semester as the president of Northern Arizona University, I must tell you how proud I am of the accomplishments generated by our talented faculty and focused students as we continue to concentrate on our undergraduate and research missions. It has been a special privilege to see our achievements acknowledged by national rankings and prestigious research grants. And I particularly enjoyed celebrating the successful semester at our fall commencement ceremonies, when we sent yet another wave of enthusiastic and well-educated graduates on to their next adventure. Here are just a few of the highlights from the past six months: * An annual report by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education ranked NAU seventh in the nation for awarding bachelor's degrees to Native Americans in all disciplines, and 50th in the nation for graduating Latino students in all undergraduate disciplines. * BestColleges.com ranked NAU's hospitality program among the top 10 best online hospitality management programs in the country. * College Factual named NAU among the top nursing colleges in the Southwest. * PolicyMic named NAU one of the most popular colleges in the country based on our growth in admission applications. * Flagstaff, home to NAU, was ranked the eighth best college town in the country by Travel + Leisure. * The National Cancer Institute awarded a five-year, $13 million grant renewal to NAU and the University of Arizona Cancer Center's Partnership for Native American Cancer Prevention. NAU will receive $7 million of the total award. You will find even more highlights in this issue of Pine, and I hope to see you soon on campus or elsewhere. Sincerely, Rita Hartung Cheng NAU President Lumberjacks have many traditions-new and old- that make our alumni network strong. Did you know that during spring and fall commencement ceremonies, members of the Alumni Association board of directors greet and congratulate each graduate with an NAU Alumni lapel pin? We believe this personal recognition of their collegiate success is a great way to welcome them to the NAU Alumni Family. Staying in touch never goes out of style, and each year we host local and regional events for alumni and friends. To see if we are coming to your area, visit our events page. With nearly 150,000 Lumberjacks spread across the globe, we're always on the lookout for new venues to visit-especially those that are owned or operated by alumni. If you have an idea for an event or a location, please send an email to alumnievents@nau.edu. Supporting our volunteer network is another tradition that helps prospective and current students learn more about the NAU experience. You can volunteer your time at outreach events or share your professional experiences with students on similar paths of study. Learn more about volunteer opportunities online. Let's continue to build on our traditions and positive momentum. Together we will make a difference.
