Even so, the images themselves come as a revelation. Granted nearly unfettered access to the studios, an unprecedented privilege among the media, some Magnum photographers even formed intimate personal relationships with their famous subjects: Robert Capa became Ingrid Bergman’s lover; Eve Arnold befriended Marilyn Monroe; Dennis Stock was asked by Nicholas Ray to be James Dean’s dialogue coach. More importantly, the freedom and independence granted Magnum’s shooters enabled them to capture some of cinema’s most illuminating and enduring images.
