CONTRIBUTORS EMILY NATHAN Lifestyle photographer Emily Nathan was thrilled to shoot this month’s fashion spread in Half Moon Bay for The Ritz-Carlton Magazine. A Bay Area local, she has “an obsession with the way light falls” and as a surfer, she is always looking for the perfect beach. Nathan’s degree is in English, but during a semester in Santiago, Chile, she started freelancing as a photojournalist for the state-owned daily newspaper. She traveled all over South America and it was then that she realized that she “didn’t want to teach poetry and be inside for a living.” Nathan is almost always on location for shoots, most recently in Hawaii, London, Miami, New York City and Poland. Clients include Apple, Martha Stewart, TOMS shoes and Travel + Leisure magazine. Nathan’s pictures specialize in natural human interaction, a love of people and color. She explains her focus is always on “light and beauty, on humanity, realism and humor.” Her experience at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay provided all that from the wide expanse of manicured lawns to the rugged cliffs and roomside ﬁrepits. WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS KRIS FRIESWICK (“Falling in Love With … Boston,” page 32) grew up in a small farming community in central Massachusetts pining for life in the big city: Boston. After 25 years living in Boston’s South End, she moved to an even bigger city, New York, where she now lives and contributes to national magazines including Departures, WSJ Magazine and Harvard Business Review. CASEY HALL (“Shopping in Shanghai,” page 48) is an Australian journalist resident in Shanghai since 2007, where she covers China’s bubbling style scene. “Shanghai is where East meets West — and the city’s shops really reﬂect this sensibility,” she says. Her favorite spot for interesting ﬁnds? The former French Concession area, where boutiques feature styles from up-and-coming local designers. Based in Berlin, PETER LANGER (“German Renaissance,” page 108), traveled to The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg for this issue to document superstar chef Sven Elverfeld’s kitchen party, an experience he likens to “walking in paradise.” Langer shoots for many international publications and counts Mercedes-Benz, Nike and Volkswagen among his commercial clients. He has published two books of his work. LISA LIMER (“Barcelona Bravura,” page 84 ) is an American travel photographer who lived in Spain for eight years in the 1990s. On returning to shoot there for this issue, she reports: “My impression of Barcelona now is of a revitalized city with renewed energy and openness.” Limer has been a proliﬁc contributor to Condé Nast Traveler since 2000, among other publications. 26 W W W.
