As a member of the U.S. Ski Team, I came here every November to prepare for the upcoming season of World Cup races. It was our last opportunity to fine-tune technique, work out the kinks in our equipment and push our limits in time trials. And it was our last chance to fully relax before hitting the road for five months. To me Beaver Creek was both training ground and sanctuary. I can’t begin to recount the vertical feet I logged on Centennial, the front-side signature run that starts gently, drops steeply, rolls in the middle, then plunges down a leg-burning, heart-pounding final pitch. We could take it in sections, dicing small- to medium-sized arcs in slalom and giant slalom on the upper and lower pitches, or take it all in one gulp as a full-length downhill, sailing over terrain at 60 mph-plus and screaming across the finish line before shutting it down near the base of the lift. Within minutes, thanks to Centennial Express (the very first high-speed lift I ever rode), we’d be at the top to do it all again. You couldn’t ask for more efficient training. Even better, after skiing there was no rush into vans and cars for the drive back to a cramped hotel. We simply kicked off our skis and walked a few steps back to our spacious, comfy rooms. That final bit of high-intensity training paired with total relaxation was priceless.
