our pleasure · traditions All Clear SpaniSh brideS hatch a plan for good weather Wishing for clear skies on your wedding day? For centuries, Spanish brides have done more than just hope. In times past, when weddings were primarily celebrated outside a church, having good weather was absolutely crucial to the event’s success — and a rainy day was thought to spell ill omen for the new family. To banish dark clouds, brides have long been counseled to bring a dozen fresh eggs to the closest monastery of the order of St. Clare, where the nuns then pray for sunshine. Why eggs, and why nuns? It’s thought that the words themselves are the key to the tradition: bringing claras (egg whites) to the nuns of Santa Clara ensures clara tiempo, or clear weather, on the wedding day.
