When Eri Raku was in first grade, fifth-grader Masaomi caught her eye - but it wasn't until 20 years later, when the pair met by chance at a dinner party, that they properly fell in love. By then, fate had done its work: The couple was engaged on their second date. Masaomi, a sculptor, had had his work displayed at The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto, so the property held special significance as the wedding venue. Meaning was rife, too, in the traditional kimono Eri wore early in the event, the bouquet created by the mother of the bride's floral instructor, and the artful favors of pottery made by a friend of the groom. The wedding date fell on Taian, an auspicious day in the Buddhist calendar, and it was fortunate, indeed, when the hotel surprised the couple with a stay in the majestic Ritz-Carlton suite - a most memorable place to toast what felt like the luckiest night of their lives.
