ave you ever gotten excited about a potential medical breakthrough only to discover that the new drug or technology is still being tested and won’t be available for years? Chances are you gave up on the idea, unaware that you might be eligible to join the test (clinical trial) yourself. To help you decide if a clinical trial might be right for you, here are some basics along with information about research under way right now at Littleton, Parker and Porter Adventist Hospitals.
What Is a ClInICal trIal?
A clinical trial is research conducted by physicians on human beings to determine the effectiveness of a newly developed drug or technology in a real world setting. Clinical trials are investigational by nature, so there are risks and benefits.
What are the rIsks and BenefIts?
The risks associated with clinical studies include possible side effects, the experimental treatment may not be effective, and the study may require more time than a nonstudy treatment, according to the National Institutes of Health. Benefits include access to potential breakthroughs before they’re widely available, expert medical care from leading health care facilities, an active role in your own health care, and the opportunity to help others by contributing to medical research.
Who Can PartICIPate?
Participants must qualify for a clinical study based on criteria designed to keep patients safe and to ensure that researchers can answer the questions under consideration. Depending on the study, criteria may include age, gender and specific questions about your current health and health history.
are ClInICal trIals regulated?
Most clinical research is federally regulated and an Institutional Review Board, a group responsible for safeguarding the rights and welfare of participants, must approve all studies before they can begin. Physicians must also follow strict rules for working with patients and gathering data.
