The hospitals of Community Healthcare System—Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart— have been included in the Chicago area U.S.News & World Report’s first-ever Best Hospitals metro area rankings. These new rankings single out some 622 hospitals in or near major cities with a record of high performance in key medical specialties, including 132 of the 152 hospitals already identified as the best in the nation. There are nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide. To be ranked in a metro area, a hospital needs to score among the top 25 percent of peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties. The new metro area rankings are aimed primarily at educating consumers about where they can find care close to home, care that matches the quality of nationally ranked hospitals.
