Q&A Kathy Nickason How long have you lived in Rolla? I was born and raised in Wisconsin, and met my husband in Hannibal. We moved to Rolla in 1968 and have been here ever since. I always said that when I retired, I wanted to be a volunteer at the hospital. So when I retired, I did! I started with the surgery waiting area, and I liked it because I enjoy having a lot of interaction with people. Kathy Nickason AUXILIARY Q Q Q What are you involved with outside of PCRMC? Meet the new president of PCRMC Auxiliary You mentioned that you retired. What did you do before volunteering at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC)? I worked at the Career Opportunities Center at Missouri S&T for 10 years. I loved working with the companies and the kids! When a student got a job with a company they wanted and came to let us know, that was a good day—we all celebrated. Before that, I worked in the office at Missouri Home Care for 16½ years. It was during the time when in-home services were brand new, and nobody knew for sure if the service was going to take off. But nobody wants to leave their home! And that’s the service we provided—cleaning, cooking and home health. I was active in Junior Club, Jaycee Wives, Planned Parenthood and OATS Theater, of which I’m currently on the board of directors. I’m also involved with my church as a Stephen minister—someone who goes through 50 hours of training to give one-on-one, confidential care to someone who’s going through a crisis like a divorce or the death of a loved one … anything that might lead someone to need someone to listen to them nonjudgmentally. It’s extremely rewarding and totally confidential. I’m also involved in Coterie and Coterie Book Club, and I’m the past president of Who’s New and You. I’m the current president of Saturday Club, was a volunteer at the Russell House for several years and belong to a chapter of By Kristen Jump the PEO Sisterhood. Q Since joining the PCRMC Auxiliary, what are some activities you’ve done? oNliNe I did the volunteer newsletter for two years, and served as secretary for two years, too. Next, I was second vice president for one year, and became president in January. This is a very exciting time for the hospital, with its renovations—the gift shop is going to be twice the size! When you walk in the main entrance, you’ll be able to walk all the way through the hospital to the east entrance without twisting and turning.
