Service: When Ted and Kim Day of Rolla learned about a device that could help stroke, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy victims walk without leg braces, they approached the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation. The result is the Abbie Darnell Fund, which helps qualified patients get access to the equipment, which often is not covered by insurance. The story of the amazing young woman who inspired the fund, and the Days’ equally amazing generosity, begins on page 49. Opportunity: Is a career in healthcare right for you? A shortage of qualified workers means hospitals like PCRMC need to fill positions everywhere from the emergency room to the cafeteria. Discover more on page 52. Attitude: “It’s thrilling to be compassionate with medicine and care,” says Surajit Majumdar, M.D., who recently joined the PCRMC internal medicine staff. Dr. Majumdar says he’s always been interested in delivering care to the sick and needy, even though his whole family works in telecommunications. Read his story and more on pages 54–55. Respect: Imagine being the victim of a brutal sexual assault, then having every item of clothing you’re wearing taken off your back. PCRMC education specialist Starlyn Reynolds, R.N., spearheaded an effort with Auxiliary and Volunteer Services to provide rape victims with “comfort kits” to offer personal items and clothing to replace what must be sent to the crime lab for testing.
