FOUNDATION Fighting Cancer: A Piece of (Cup)Cake! Young Rolla baker raises more than $500 for patient relief fund H ow many kids can say they spent part of their summer vacation brightening the lives of local cancer patients? Brenna Heavin, 9, made it her mission to do something to help people in need—and raised more than $500. Brenna, who loves to bake with her grandmother, decided to sell cupcakes to raise money for Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation’s Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. Although her immediate family hasn’t been affected by cancer, the family is related to the fund’s founder, Joy Heavin. “We like to call Brenna our ‘Save the World’ child,” say her parents, Geoff and Tonya Heavin. “She wants to help people who aren’t able to do some things for themselves.” AN AMBITIOUS, DELICIOUS PLAN For a $1 donation, buyers could choose either a chocolate cupcake with white icing or a vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing. After family, friends and neighbors placed their orders, the ﬁ nal tally was a daunting 336 cupcakes—that’s 28 dozen! At 8:30 a.m. Brenna began baking and decorating, and continued all day until her orders were completed; the next day, she and her mother delivered the cupcakes and updated their customers on the fundraiser’s success. Through cupcake sales and additional donations, Brenna raised $501 for the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. She’s already planning a second fundraiser for next year. experience the same stresses. After the PCRMC Bond Clinic hired her as its ﬁrst cancer care coordinator in 1995, Joy formed a relief plan for cancer patients, and with the clinic’s support she began the Joy of Caring Foundation. “Along with my family, the Joy of Caring Fund is the accomplishment I’m most proud of,” Joy said. Sadly, Joy lost her battle with cancer in 1996, but the end result of her hard work, dedication and compassion lives on. The Foundation now manages the fund, which provides ﬁnancial assistance to patients who are undergoing cancer treatment and having difﬁculty with daily living activities. The fund can assist patients with prescription medications, food supplements, wigs, mastectomy bras and even home heating and cooling repairs. Bre nna Heavin The Joy of Caring Cancer Fund is named in memory of Renee Joy Heavin, an Edgar Springs resident who was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 1992. That same month, her husband lost his job of 21 years— and the family’s health beneﬁts—when a production facility closed.
