AUXILIARY Lending a Helping Hand—Or 80 With VolunTEEN program, local teens help out at PCRMC and learn about jobs in healthcare S ummer is a great time to relax and have fun, but many teens today also fill their break with activities, camps, jobs and giving back. Forty local teens did just that by spending part of their summer as a VolunTEEN at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC). The teens came from Rolla, St. James, Owensville, Vienna and Dixon for a summer of volunteerism, fun, friendship and a bit of learning. The PCRMC Auxiliary and Volunteer Services department hosts the VolunTEEN program each summer for teens who are at least 14 and have a C+ or higher GPA. The auxiliary offered sessions in June and July, and teens could choose to volunteer for either session (or both). By the program’s end, the teens had provided 1,500 total hours of volunteer service. “The teens provided much-deserved breaks for many of the volunteers at the PCRMC Medical Office Building, the Main and North information desks as greeters and escorts, the hospitality cart and nursing dispatch areas,” says Crystal Lorah, Auxiliary and Volunteer Services coordinator. “They also assisted with the Take a Stand Against Child Abuse fundraiser and nursing-simulator training.” As part of the VolunTEEN program, teens learned about careers in healthcare and assisted with fundraisers and training. Participants also learned about careers in healthcare from PCRMC employees who work in education, organizational development, medical imaging, surgery, ambulatory surgery, the laboratory, respiratory services, public relations and marketing, nurse recruitment, human resources, physician services and the Mid-Missouri Area Health Education Center. Teens volunteered a total of more than 1,500 hours of service this summer. OnLine Forty local teens participated in the 2011 VolunTEEN program at PCRMC.
