Turn to page 6 to read how Peggy Davis of Crown Point, Carolyn Goebel of Griffith and Edward Behling of Portage have had major surgeries with a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time once home. Accessing healthcare can often appear to be a puzzling maze with tests, appointments, paperwork and phone calls. Quality care navigators at our hospitals, including those at St. Mary Medical Center, can help make your experience less stressful and more successful. These special nurses serve as your personal healthcare contact—someone who knows your care plan, collaborates with your physicians, and answers any questions about your condition and treatments— even after discharge (page 50). Special therapy is sometimes necessary to help little bodies thrive. On page 54, find out how 3-year-old Maggie Akers is learning basic feeding skills from Community Hospital’s highly trained staff that will shape her future and last a lifetime. Although ACL repair usually includes a longer road to recovery, the staff members at St. Catherine Hospital are working to make it a more pleasant patient experience—one that allows patients, such as Lydia Banda, to get back to their everyday activities as soon as possible (page 52).
