OUT OF THE WHITE COAT Weight Lifted Bariatric surgeon serves his country and community R obert Richard, M.D., FACS, is a boardcertiﬁed surgeon who has performed bariatric surgical procedures for more than a decade. Dr. Richard attended Cornell University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He fulﬁ lled his surgical, laparoscopic and bariatric training at Harvard University’s prestigious Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. After training, Dr. Richard served as the ﬁrst director of the Blanchﬁeld Army Community Hospital’s bariatric surgical program (Fort Campbell, Ky.). As an active trauma surgeon for the U.S. Army, Dr. Richard deployed to Afghanistan shortly after Sept. 11; he was recalled in 2004 to serve in Iraq as a senior trauma surgeon in Saddam Hussein’s hometown. Today, as one of Georgia’s leading surgeons, Dr. Richard performs gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and the two adjustable gastric bands available in the U.S. He serves as the medical director at the Center for Surgical Weight Management at Gwinnett Medical Center–Duluth. Outside of the white coat, Dr. Richard is an active volunteer, providing medical and surgical aid to Haiti through a local church group. An avid outdoor sports enthusiast, he currently plays golf and tennis.
