Innovator Thanks to Joseph Bond, D.O., cancer care can be both leading-edge and local Joseph Bond, d.o., was the instrumental force that brought cancer services to the Rolla community in the early 1980s. since then, cancer services in the area have expanded and changed, but what matters most has stayed the same: world-class cancer care, close to home. Joseph Bond, D.O. The STARTING OUT dr. Bond received his degree in internal medicine from the Kirksville College of osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at des peres hospital in st. Louis. he is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, and his practicing specialty includes hematology and medical oncology. When dr. Bond began his practice in Rolla in 1981, there were no cancer services in the area; the nearest oncologists/hematologists were in st. Louis, springfield and Columbia. dr. Bond began practicing general oncology and inpatient chemotherapy with an office in the old medical building adjacent to phelps County Regional Medical Center (pCRMC), while outpatient chemo was established at the hospital. Implementing oncology services in the area was not an easy feat, and required a person with immense vision and dedication— a vision dr. Bond was committed to establishing in the Rolla area. he worked to move as quickly as possible because the need for oncology services in the community was great. Initially, he performed many roles to make sure the best cancer services were established. “At first, I had to determine the types of care to be given and clarify what we would do and how we would do it,” he says. “I coordinated with other physicians in pathology, diagnostic radiology and surgery, worked with the pharmacy to establish chemotherapy agents, determined the chemotherapy to use, did educational training for the nursing staff and continued to work with my patients.” > “We have always maintained a personal relationship with our patients.
