Is Just a Number Louise Dewing retires in May—at 93, after nearly four decades on the job AGE L BY SOMER OVERSHON ouise Dewing is a special person and employee. She worked at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) for 39 years, only recently retiring in May. At her hospital retirement party, when asked how old she was, Dewing replied, “About 100, and I am thankful for it!” While she may have overshot her age a little bit, she wasn’t off by much: At 93, she has dedicated her life to helping patients at the hospital. Over the years Dewing worked many jobs at PCRMC, most recently as an assistant in the medical imaging and radiology department. She says she has kept herself going for so long because she doesn’t do much sitting, and always keeps moving. “Working is all I know,” she says. “I have done it all of my life.” Although she has retired from PCRMC, Dewing says she doesn’t plan on slowing Lou ise Dew ing ret ired in May afte r 39 yea rs at PCR MC . down; she still works on her 190-acre farm outside Rolla, where she says she takes care of her yard and cattle. Dewing says she enjoyed getting to know the patients over the years and learning about the healthcare ﬁeld. “Some of the patients I knew; some I didn’t,” she says. “I just always tried to take care of them the way I would want to be treated myself. I learned a lot about healthcare and taking care of people.” John R. Denbo, chief executive ofﬁcer at PCRMC, was one of the many guests to wish Dewing well on her retirement. “You are a model to all of us,” he said at the party. “Thank you for all you have done for PCRMC. We will miss you.” Frank Lazarro, director of human resources, presented Dewing with a token of the hospital’s gratitude: a beautiful diamond necklace. Dewing doesn’t plan on letting retirement slow her down. She says she will keep working as long as she is able. “I enjoy working, honey,” she says. “I am not one to go home and sit in a chair.” TOOLS PCRMC CEO John R.
