The BioVision digital specimen radiography system allows surgeons to instantly image specimens while the patient remains in the operating room so that further BioVision specimens can be taken without delay, if necessary. Surgeons can also determine that adequate tissue has been taken while the patient is still under anesthesia, says Surgeon M. Nabil Shabeeb, M.D., FACS. ebUS Patients with lung disease seeking quicker results and a less invasive diagnostic experience will benefit from new technology being used by pulmonologists at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. EBUS Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is a relatively new procedure used to diagnose lung cancer, infections or other diseases causing enlarged lymph nodes in the chest. “EBUS allows us to perform a technique known as transbronchial needle aspiration to obtain tissue or fluid samples from the lungs and surrounding lymph nodes through the mouth without surgery,” says Charles Rebesco, M.D., boardcertified pulmonologist on staff at St. Mary Medical Center. CyberKnife Physicians at the CyberKnife Center at St. Catherine Hospital are successfully stopping prostate cancer in its tracks without pain or incisions for the patient. This advancement in stereotactic radiosurgery is getting patients through a quicker recovery and back to their normal activities sooner. “CyberKnife has a distinct advantage as a treatment option for prostate cancer in that it can deliver high doses of radiation with extreme precision, causing less harm to healthy tissue and minimizing side effects,” says CyberKnife Medical Director Andrej Zajac, M.D., a radiation oncologist.
