Saving Time, Saving Lives BY MARIE FORSZT What to do and where to go when chest pain strikes W The Chest Pain Centers of Community Hospital, St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center are fully accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. This designation confirms that the care provided to Chest Pain Center patients is among the best in the country and can make a difference in recovery. e’ve all heard the message—when a heart attack strikes, every second counts. Unfortunately, too few people are taking this important advice to heart. The hospitals of Community Healthcare System are working to change the slow response and greatly improve the odds for patients experiencing heart attacks. Working at every level, from educating the public to improving coordination between ﬁrst responders and hospital personnel, Community Healthcare System healthcare professionals are focused on saving valuable time to minimize the damage that a heart attack can cause. Through these efforts, Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart have become Accredited Chest Pain Centers through the Society of Chest Pain Centers. This distinction was earned through a rigorous evaluation of their cardiac care services, practices, guidelines and treatment protocols during the critical ﬁrst stages of heart attack. Accredited Chest Pain Centers are designed to stabilize and treat heart attack patients immediately, when the chances of recovering are the greatest.
