FOUNDATION Giving Med Students a Leg Up Memorial scholarship helps with expenses Jay Crump, D.O. I n 2011, the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation created a scholarship fund that will not only assist medical students pursuing a career in family practice but also ensure that Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) offers quality healthcare to future generations. THE PROGRAM The fund honors Jay Crump, D.O., who began working in the emergency room at PCRMC in 1981. Three years later he was named medical director of Emergency Services, a position he held until 2009. Crump also served as vice president and chief medical officer at PCRMC from 1997 until his death in 2010. Under his eye and guidance, the emergency department grew fivefold, from a five-bed operation to the 25 private rooms that exist today. THE PURPOSE In an effort to promote and increase health services to residents of Phelps and surrounding counties, the fund offers a scholarship to qualified medical students who: • Live permanently in PCRMC’s service area • Specialize in family practice • Will establish and maintain a full-time physician practice at PCRMC THE PARTICULARS Scholarships are awarded yearly based on availability, not to exceed $25,000 per year, for up to four years of medical school and up to three years of a residency program.
