Stauffer editorial Board Heather Boyce Kelli Massey Amy Motteram Keyonda Noel Beth Okun Dolores Ware s the landscape of healthcare continues to evolve, Gwinnett Medical Center stays ahead of the curve. Today, decision-making is more integrated—involving physicians, patients and hospitals—and can take place at lightning-fast speed. Such conditions make efficient communications paramount. To improve the patient experience, GMC continually embraces emerging technology. To that end, we are launching GMC HealthConnect, a secure online program that enables greater patient-physician communication and facilitates coordination of care among providers. Similar to an electronic health record, GMC HealthConnect provides even greater patient-physician connectivity by allowing patients to ask nonurgent questions, request medication refills, schedule appointments, and receive lab, X-ray and other test results. Also through GMC HealthConnect, patients can store, view and update health information in one secure place and choose to provide access to physicians. This physician access promotes quality results and helps eliminate duplicative tests. Additionally, the system can help manage care for dependents and serve as a resource for those suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Another new technology, MedGift, is now offered to GMC patients. This social media tool provides patients a community of support and online listings of “Needs,” “Wants” and “Wishes.” It is similar to gift registries used for weddings. Under Needs, secure payments can be made when patients request support related to medical expenses. Wants lists items that patients want such as new wigs, magazine subscriptions, medical devices and family meals. Wishes includes items that provide emotional or practical support, such as prayers or child care. Finally, we have a new system that provides greater flexibility to families who want to leave the hospital but remain in communication with medical staff through texts. This adoption of technology has been noticed by the media, too. We are listed among the InformationWeek 500, which spotlights the nation’s most innovative users of business technology. Although we are proud of this designation and many others, it’s our patient experience that drives our quality and innovation. Really, our priorities are simple: Face-to-face care matters most. Then, if personal interaction can be improved through technology, it’s important to us at GMC.
