OUT OF THE WHITE COAT Out and About Emergency medicine specialist has an adventurous spirit A native of Tampa, Fla., K. Carlton Buchanan Jr., MD, received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Florida. He completed his residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was named Resident of the Year in 1996–97. For more than 15 years, Dr. Buchanan has practiced medicine at Gwinnett Medical Center, working in the Emergency Department at GMC–Lawrenceville. Among his achievements, he has been chief of the ER for four years, chief medical information officer, interim chief medical officer and medical director of the ER, and in spring 2012 he was elected medical staff president. He jokes that eventually he will have held every job at GMC. Dr. Buchanan has a strong interest in stroke and cardiac care. Not only was he an original member of GMC’s specialty stroke team when it started in 1998, but he was also caring for the very first patient to receive the clot-busting drug tPA at the hospital system. And over the years, he has participated in a number of stroke research studies in the ER. He was also instrumental in bringing open heart services to Gwinnett, testifying during GMC’s appeal for a certificate of need. The Buchanan family even donated funds to help complete one of the heart catheterization labs, which is named in honor of Dr. Buchanan’s father.
