Up Internist Edward Bruns, DO, delights in four decades of change in gastroenterology TO THE Challenge BY SOMER OVERSHON TOP PHOTO BY THINKSTOCK A s the interview for his story began, Edward Bruns, DO, was quick to say “his story” was just one facet of a team and that none of the successes of the Endoscopy Department rests solely on his shoulders. Rather, he says, the successes over the years have been a coordinated effort from an excellent administrative, nursing and physician staff at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC). Dr. Bruns completed his residency in 1972 and has practiced for 41 years. He came to work at PCRMC in 1990. At that time, Dr. Bruns brought with him gastrointestinal (GI) procedures and skills that had not yet been implemented at PCRMC. One of those procedures was ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram), which is an endoscopic procedure to look at the pancreas and bile ducts for medical diagnosis and treatment. Under the leadership of PCRMC CEO John Denbo, Dr. Bruns says he was Edward Bruns, DO able to secure the equipment to begin performing ERCP procedures for patients in both the Bond Clinic and the hospital. “PCRMC has been very supportive over the years about the expansion of medical services based on community need,” he says. “The PCRMC physicians and staff have always been eager to learn new technology. Everyone is in on it and on board with procuring new treatment procedures for the beneﬁt of our community and patients.” GETTING INTO HIS SPECIALTY Dr. Bruns is not a gastroenterologist; he is a general internist with fellowship experience in gastrointestinal issues. In 2000, he decided to focus only on GI cases, because he found GI work complex—difﬁcult, challenging, requiring investigation, all of the things he enjoyed. The challenge was the reason Dr. Bruns became a physician in the ﬁrst place, that, he says, and “the fortuitous event of meeting my wife.” At the time he met his wife (Mary Bruns, DO, a family practice physician at the PCRMC Bond Clinic), he was an engineer. “My wife said, ‘You like a challenge— why not try medicine?’ ” And the rest, as they say, is history. > FAL L 2013 3
