Clear Picture Getting a True to his calling, radiologist Edward Downey, D.O., uses imaging to investigate and diagnose disease BY SOMER OVERSHON Edward Downey, D.O., a radiologist at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC), discovered his love of radiology through a process of elimination. After two clinical rotations in medical school, one in family practice and one in psychiatry, Dr. Downey knew he did not want to practice either. Instead, he spent the next six weeks in a classroom studying radiology and two more weeks with Robert Meals, D.O., chairman of the radiology program at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Meals produced more radiologists from the medical education community than any of his radiology colleagues in other schools of osteopathic medicine. “From that point on,” Dr. Downey says, “I focused all of my energies on radiology and its practice.” DETECTIVE WORK Radiology is a specialty of medicine that uses imaging, such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT), MRI, ultrasound and nuclear medicine, as well as percutaneEdward Downey, D.O. ous interventional procedures, such as biopsies and drainages, to determine or work out a problem for a patient.
