Donna Bond today and when she graduated from nursing school (1962) Half-Century of Service Donna Bond celebrates 50 years in the nursing profession By Somer overShon Education EmpowErs Bond has primarily worked in a psychiatric or long-termcare setting. She says she enjoys having the opportunity to empower patients to improve their emotional difficulties. “So much of the psychiatric field involves education,” Bond says. “People cannot be expected to change without education. My goal is to help my patients improve by educating them on their medicines, communication skills and coping mechanisms.” Bond says she always wants her patients to know that just because something has always been one way does not mean it has to stay that way. “I have found that most people want to gain control back in their lives, and they are willing to learn,” she says. “Every little step forward helps—simply helping patients understand that emotional and mental illness is treatable is powerful knowledge for them to have on their road to recovery.” advicE for nursEs starting out Bond is a firm believer in the power of education. Throughout her career, she has advanced her education whenever she has been able. “Never stop learning,” she advises people just starting out in the nursing field, “no matter where you start. 8 S PRINg 2 013 50-Year Career • diploma in nursing, 1962 • Bachelor of science in nursing, 1971 • master of science, psychiatric nursing of adults with minor in administration, 1975 • director of in-service education, 1974–79 • field project manager, 1979–82 • director of nursing, 1984–89 • clinical nurse specialist, 1997–2007 • staff nurse, 2008–present Keep advancing your education because you never know where an opportunity might take you.” There are numerous avenues in the nursing profession, Bond says, and continuing education opens up more doors. “There are so many ways to practice nursing,” she adds. “Having a solid educational background will never hinder a person; it will only increase opportunities in a field with vast possibilities.” onlinE D onna Bond, R.N., M.S.N., recently celebrated 50 years in the nursing profession. Bond works in the psychiatric unit at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) and has spent 47 years caring for others; Bond kept her nursing license active the entire 50 years, only taking a few years off to raise her two children and advance her education. Bond says the most dramatic change she witnessed in the nursing vocation over the past 50 years is the way nursing professionals view themselves. “Nursing has evolved to become a profession that no longer views itself as subservient to other medical professions,” Bond says. “Instead, nursing has become autonomous and is responsible for its own actions, beliefs and outcomes.” Join Our Team Interested in a career at PCRMC?
