By Somer overShon N urses at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) are being honored monthly with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of The DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize outstanding nurses and the work they perform every day. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died in 1999 at age 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, or ITP, a littleknown but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families. Each month, a nurse will be selected by PCRMC’s DAISY Committee to receive The DAISY Award. At a presentation in front of colleagues, physicians, patients and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate recognizing him or her for being an extraordinary nurse. The honoree will also receive a beautiful sculpture, called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Africa, and Cinnabon cinnamon rolls—a favorite of Barnes—for all of the employees in the honoree’s unit. Susan LaPlante, BSN, RN-BC, says The DAISY Award is a wonderful way to celebrate nurses. “As a member of the profession of nursing, it is my honor to present The DAISY Award to our recipients,” she says. “These are proud moments for all nurses. I know firsthand the many ways nurses impact lives of those they serve in any setting.” The PCRMC Auxiliary also plays a special role in the planning and support of The DAISY Award winners. Auxiliary members supply the balloons and the lunch at The Lemon Tree Grill for the award ceremony. Tina Pridgeon, director of Auxiliary & Volunteer Services, says the Auxiliary is honored to be a part of celebrating nurses and the caring work they do every day. “I feel privileged to represent the Auxiliary on the selection committee for this exceptional nursing award that honors our nurses who touch the lives of our patients,” Pridgeon says. “This is one more example of how Auxiliary & Volunteer Services can support PCRMC’s mission of world-class healthcare with this prestigious international nursing award.” http://www.pcrmc.com http://www.daisyfoundation.org
