By Somer overShon A stroke is an event in the brain where blood flow is reduced, causing brain cells to die, says Mignon Makos, MD, a neurologist at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC). Stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or, more commonly, when a blockage develops. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and although many people associate stroke with old age, stroke can happen to anyone, at any age; in fact, one-third of all stroke victims are younger than 65.
