Finding the Perfect Balance After nearly a decade, Dr. Judyann Krenning finds her calling as an ENT Judyann Krenning, MD, knew she wanted to be a doctor from the time she was 8 years old, although she admits her route to practice medicine was "a bit circuitous." After skipping a grade, she began college early, though she did not finish because she got married and had two children. "Eight years later I was divorced," Dr. Krenning says. "I couldn't subsist and raise my two children on the salary I was making. I knew I needed to go back to school." Dr. Krenning says she did have the foresight to do some medical training in the meantime, and worked as a phlebotomist for a year and then completed on-the-job training in respiratory therapy (RT). She took an exam in RT and did that for 10 years. "I was able to get back into school, at St. Louis University, and maintained a high grade point average," Dr. Krenning says. "My financial situation was pretty destitute at the time, so I qualified for some Pell Grants." Answered PrAyers suRgERy PhoTo by saRah wilsoN Dr. Krenning hung on during that time through the grace of God. "I am a Christian," she says. "I prayed that God would provide the kids and me with a wonderful man. So, while I was in church, an extremely handsome man came up and asked me out on a date. I remember looking around, like 'Me? Really?' I am happy to say that my husband and I have been married for 27 years and he ended up adopting my children. It is a wonderful story." By this time, Dr. Krenning had been in college for two years. "My husband saw us through the next two years of college and I wound up in medical school," says Dr. Krenning. "He supported and encouraged me to go after my dream of becoming a physician." Dr. Judyann Krenning performs a variety of ENT surgeries at PCRMC. By Somer overShon Choosing A sPeCiAlty When Dr. Krenning was attending medical school, the third year consisted of the clerkship years, which included six small clerkships and two long clerkships of surgery and internal medicine. "My first half of the year I spent doing the six small clerkships, but when I wound up on surgery I was in heaven," says Dr. Krenning. "All of the surgery clerks were assigned a mentor, and mine was the chairman of the Otolaryngology Department. I had always thought I would go into family practice because WI NTER 2013 3
