A Team Approach to Heart Care PCRMC's Heart and Vascular Center provides high-quality care for area patients By Somer overShon T he Heart and Vascular Center at Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) is a place where area patients go to receive highquality heart and vascular care. Patient care is at the heart of why PCRMC is committed to offering world-class cardiology care with Thomas Martin, MD, Timothy Martin, MD, James Spadaro, MD, and Steven Ballard, ANP. Dr. Tom Martin, Dr. Tim Martin, Dr. Spadaro and Adult Nurse Practitioner Steve Ballard work as a team and rely on their years of experience, skill and expertise to diagnose and treat an array of heart and vascular conditions. The team approach is so valuable that the providers cannot envision working without this mind-set, a goal that remains a priority to each of them to ensure the continued success of the PCRMC Heart and Vascular Center. The team discusses how the PCRMC Heart and Vascular Center is providing state-ofthe-art cardiac care on a daily basis, why each individual chose medicine in the first place and why caring for their patients is so important. Thomas Martin, MD family ties Dr. Tom Martin's interest in medicine began in his childhood years after spending time at his uncle's practice in Wright City, Mo. He chose cardiology because it fascinated him, and also for his forte to read EKGs. "I loved it; I was good at it, and it blossomed from there," he says. Dr. Martin was prepared to retire several years ago, but when he called the Chief of Cardiology at Washington University, he learned he had an opportunity to work as a full-time faculty member at Washington University and work in a practice in Rolla. "I always liked the country, and as a teenager spent most of the summer in the country farming, so working in Rolla was a natural fit where I had the opportunity to continue practicing cardiology," says Dr. Martin. rewarding Career For Dr. Martin, the services offered by the PCRMC Heart and Vascular Center are special because of the excellence provided. "I have worked in many hospitals," he says. "The nursing care here is the best I have ever seen, with innovative equipment and healthcare professionals who give patients state-of-the-art care."
