AuxiliAry volunteens Make a Difference Area teenagers participate in the VolunTEEN program at PCRMC By Ashley Wilson T he 2013 summer brought PCRMC another wonderful VolunTEEN program full of extraordinary teens, ages 14-17. Twenty-nine VolunTEENs entered the program-from Dixon, Doolittle, Edgar Springs, Rolla and St. James-where they had the chance to provide a helping hand at the hospital. Helping everyone The teens were able to help out with the main entrance, north entrance, medical office building, the hospitality cart, nursing dispatch and the gift shop. While working at the main entrance, north entrance and medical office building, the VolunTEENS escorted, greeted and ran errands for the staff and adult volunteers. At nursing dispatch, they delivered papers to different nursing stations. The VolunTEENS running the hospitality cart served complimentary refreshments consisting of cocoa, tea, different coffee products, lemonade and water to the guests in waiting rooms-all of whom enjoyed having the hospitality cart available. In the Lily Pad gift shop, VolunTEENS priced items and organized and stocked shelves. learning tHe ropes Right: VolunTEENS Cassie and Jesse are suited up and ready to observe surgery. people!" The program also had occupational health, phlebotomy, sleep observation, pharmacy and basic CPR skills presentations. a Win-Win All of the teens had a great time helping out the hospital and had the satisfaction of knowing they made a difference. Crystal Lorah, Auxiliary and Volunteer Services coordinator, believes the VolunTEEN program helps the hospital in many ways. "It's very beneficial to the hospital, and it provides much needed support and friendly customer service in the places needed most," she says. Another supporter of the VolunTEEN program is Tina Pridgeon, director of Auxiliary and Volunteer Services. "VolunTEENS are our future, and the Auxiliary is proud to fund this exceptional program each year," says Pridgeon. Call The VolunTEEN program introduced the teens to different areas in the medical field. Many teens were able to observe different kinds of surgeries. "The best part of the surgery observation was watching and learning about the tools they used," says Lindsey, one of the VolunTEENS. Another VolunTEEN, Maddie, says, "It was really cool looking inside Above: VolunTEENS Payton, Claudia, Jenny, Lefatshe and Lee take a course in CPR. Get Involved!
