What are the signs and
symptoms of depression
in seniors?
Signs and symptoms of depression in seniors include
becoming more withdrawn, similar to the withdrawal caused by grief; making comments about their
usefulness; making comments that they are going
to more funerals than weddings; loss of friends or
family; and comments about the loss of work or independence. "Seniors are very much aware of the life

he onset of depression in seniors is common and is often the result of cognizance about aging and the life changes
that come with aging," says Philip Cox,
PhD, PCRMC Chaplain. "One factor is
physical decline and the awareness of the decline.
Physical decline can be felt from old age and the limits aging puts on the body, or it can be caused by a
chronic illness or dementia," says Dr. Cox. "Another
factor of depression can occur when seniors begin to
question their usefulness and purpose, and a third
reason is when an older adult experiences a loss of
identity. Seniors often can no longer identify with
their younger selves or who they were several years
ago. For instance, no longer being able to work or
remain independent puts a strain on their identity.
