PERSPECTIVES The Story That Went Viral EVERY DAY, PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES are cared for at hospitals, and lives are changed in big and small ways. Most of those moments are largely unnoticed by the general public, but every once in a while, a patient's story strikes a chord and affects those who hear it. That was the case last spring when a 3-year-old's reaction to hearing his father's voice for the first time was captured on video. The look of surprise on Grayson Clamp's face as his brainstem implant was activated was undeniably an incredible moment for him and his family, as well as the medical professionals who had been caring for him. The video clip went viral on social media, and soon, Grayson's parents were asked to appear on several news programs, including the Today Show. The remarkable story of a little boy who spent three years in complete silence being given the opportunity to hear was shared by so many people, we decided to check in with Grayson and his family a year later to see how he is doing. Read his remarkable story on page 5. Please be sure and tell us what you would like to see in future issues of Well by taking our survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/UNCWell2014.
