UNC HEALTH CARE NEWS
UNC Hospitals' excellent surgical outcomes were recognized
for the second year in a row by the American College of
Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program
(NSQIP). UNC Hospitals is the only hospital in North Carolina
and the only academic medical center in the country to receive
this honor.
Each year, this designation is given to a select group of
hospitals for achieving excellent surgical outcomes related to
patient management in nine clinical areas.
"The NSQIP is the gold standard for quality data reporting
and measures for surgical outcomes, and the only externally
validated and objective data on surgical quality available.
This award is a true honor, representing the breadth of surgical care and true patient outcomes," says Mark Koruda, MD,
FACS, vice chair of the Department of Surgery at the UNC
School of Medicine.
UNC Hospitals tracks the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collects data that directs patient
safety and the quality of surgical care improvements.

N.C. Children's Hospital
Is Now a Level I Pediatric
Trauma Center
N.C. Children's Hospital, which is part of UNC Health Care,
has been verified as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center by the
American College of Surgeons.
"The criteria for obtaining Level I trauma verification are
amazingly stringent," says Jennifer Haynes, RN, MSN, MHA,
CPEN, manager of the trauma program at UNC Hospitals.
"They are designed to ensure a center has both the capability
and dedication to provide the absolute highest level of care
from the minute a
patient hits the door to
the day of discharge."
N.C. Children's
Hospital is the first
in the Triangle, and
one of only two in the
entire state, to receive
Level 1 Pediatric
Trauma Center designation. It joins the
ranks of approximately 40 others across the country and is
one of only a few in the Southeast.
"We've offered child-specific trauma care for a number
of years," says Wesley Burks, MD, physician in chief of N.C.
Children's Hospital. "Becoming a Level I Pediatric Trauma
Center is taking our commitment to providing the best care
one step further."
