I am particularly happy to announce that we have expanded our system of heart and vascular providers with the new UNC Heart & Vascular Network. The new network brings together the former Wake Heart & Vascular Associates, Rex Heart & Vascular Specialists, and the UNC Center for Heart & Vascular Care to provide comprehensive, specialized cardiovascular care throughout central and eastern North Carolina. In addition to providing access to exceptional care in patients' local communities where they can have diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, physicians with the UNC Heart & Vascular Network will work together to transfer patients who need more complicated or specialized procedures. In this issue, you can read more about how the heart and vascular specialists at UNC Health Care are sharing resources, using technology and advancing research to provide care for our communities today and in the future. In the feature on page 10, we highlight a patient who is an excellent example of how the UNC Health Care network of physicians benefits the community. Craig Wilkins is a patient whose primary care physician in Cary referred him to a cardiologist at Rex Hospitals. Eventually, his condition required an additional advanced procedure, and he was sent to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. This is the kind of comprehensive, coordinated care that is possible when physicians join forces.
