That was certainly the case for Kena Sawyers, who struggled with the basic task of breathing, which most of us don't even think about. After years of relying on an oxygen tank and dealing with limitations due to failing lungs, Kena is now free from her breathing tether and able to do things she wasn't able to before her successful lung transplant. Read about her story on page 8. Many patients, such as Kena, travel to UNC Hospitals from out of town for expertise and technology that are not available at their local health care facilities. When their care requires them to stay for extended periods, it can cause a financial strain that is an added burden to families who are already dealing with a lot. SECU Family House provides lower-cost housing and a community of people who understand the challenges of going through a health crisis. Read more about the Family House on page 6. As health care needs continue to grow across the state, UNC Health Care is committed to bringing excellent care to local communities. This summer, the Hillsborough Campus opens a new facility with emergency care, surgery and outpatient care.Visit unchillsborough.org for more information about the services available at this new, state-of-the-art facility.
