266 Professionals Earn CMCA Credential
New England Chapter Members Recognized
he National Board of Certification for Community Association Managers (NBCCAM) granted credentials to 266 professionals who earned their Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA) credential between March 1 and June 30, 2010. The CMCA signifies that a manager has passed NBC-CAM’s national exam and met the requirements for managing condominium, cooperative and homeowner associations. More than 10,000 professionals have earned CMCA certification since the program was created in 1995. To obtain CMCA certification, managers must complete and pass a prerequisite course on community association management or fulfill the experience requirement, and pass the NBC-CAM CMCA examination. Certified managers must adhere to the

CMCA Standards of Professional Conduct and take continuing education courses for recertification. CMCA recipients who don't comply with the CMCA Standards of Professional Conduct are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including suspension or revocation of the credential. NBC-CAM is the first and only national organization created solely to certify community association managers and to help consumers identify managers who have demonstrated fundamental competency and knowledge in this profession. With the dramatic increase in associationgoverned housing, there is an expanded need for education in community association management. The number of associations in the United States has grown from 10,000 in 1970 to more than 300,000 today.

EPA Extends Deadline
n June 18, 2010, the EPA announced that since the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP) became effective on April 22, 2010, concerns have been raised regarding difficulties experienced in obtaining the rule required firm certification and renovation worker training. Among other requirements, the strict new RRP Rule requires contractors to obtain certification for renovation firms and training for employees who will be supervising work. Acknowledging the concerns regarding certification and training, the EPA is offering additional time for renovation firms and workers to obtain the necessary training and certifications to comply as follows:

• Until Oct. 1, 2010, the EPA will not take enforcement action for violations of the RRP Rule’s firm certification requirement. • For violations of the RRP Rule’s renovation worker certification requirement, the EPA will not enforce against individual renovation workers if the person has applied to enroll in, or has enrolled in, by not later than Sept. 30, 2010, a certified renovator class to train contractors in the practices necessary for compliance with the final rules. Renovators must complete the training by Dec. 31, 2010. According to the EPA, in view of the paramount importance of

ensuring that all contractors follow the lead-safe work practices in the RRP rule, EPA will continue to enforce the work practice requirements in the rule. Information about lead-safe work practices can be found at www.epa.gov. EPA considers the certification and training requirements important to ensure that firms are protecting children and other residents while renovations are ongoing. While to date, training providers have offered more than 15,000 classes and trained 300,000 people, the agency believes that allowing additional time for firms and individuals to obtain that training and certification will facilitate compliance with the rule.
