test for membership. The cost of membership is minimal, but the benefits will
far exceed the expense.
In planning for good meetings, an
association should also offer resources that provide owners with the ability to become familiar with rules of
order. This is likely most challenging
as getting owners even to come to an
annual meeting is difficult. But there
are simple steps that an association
can take to offer such opportunities.
For instance, a one-page summary
or itemization of the very basic rules
can be sent to owners along with a
meeting notice. That way, owners
who decide to come to a meeting will
have been given the rules. Copies
could also be handed out for reference during the meeting. If members
in a meeting know what the rules
are and the rules are fair and fairly
applied, they're generally willing to
abide by them.
The president should also take some
time at the start or just before the start
of the meeting to familiarize verbally
the members with the rules that will
apply at the meeting.
These rules are generally pretty simple and well known, such as you can't
interrupt a speaker or accuse someone
of being a liar. While some folks will
make every attempt to call another
member a liar, most won't and will be
annoyed with a member who does.
They will also cheer on a president who
stops a member from name-calling and
bad behavior.
Good meetings require a focused,
committed, and directed plan for familiarizing the leadership and the owners
with rules of order. Associations can't
get away without meetings. But they
can plan good meetings that will be as
short as possible while still allowing for
considered debate and, most likely, the
best decisions.
