Our community associations are facing aging
populations and occupants should not rely on
board and management companies for assistance.
STAY SAFE AT HOME
Home security systems have come a long
way. There are many that do not require
a professional installer and, even more
importantly, do not require any use of
common element. All that is needed is an
Internet connection and installation of
the necessary cameras in the rooms you
want to observe. Again, we look to our
telephones. Through the system's app,
you can see what is happening within
your home. Clearly this ability to protect
your own home provides more security
and peace of mind than anything boards
or management companies could do.
While all community security features
can be helpful, we must always be
responsible for our own safety. While it
often appears from the news that someone
is always watching us, even if that
is true, it does not relieve any of us for
individual responsibility. Actions such
as propping front doors open or buzzing
strangers into the building not only put
us at risk but put our fellow association
residents at risk.
Our community associations are
facing aging populations and occupants
should not rely on board and management
companies for assistance. While
the " help, I have fallen and can't get up "
adage has become the basis for many a
comedy routine, nevertheless, this is in
fact a real problem in communities.
Occupants (and often their families)
think they can rely on boards and management
companies to assist in these situations.
However, there are gadgets that
are readily available to assist with this;
using technology for protection is far
better than relying on management and
boards who (absent fi re and other extreme
situations) are not involved with
owners once they are in their respective
units. After all, community associations
are not assisted living facilities.
Exploring the world of technology can
enable all of us to take reasonable steps
to protect ourselves so that we can keep
calm and carry on.
