key eConoMIC InDICaTors U.S. gross domestic product totaled $11.7 trillion in 2008, reflecting a 2.3 percent compounded annual growth rate since 2004. Despite this mild growth, the overall economy saw unfavorable changes in key economic indicators as it headed towards a recession. Some of the most notable changes in the four year compounded annual growth rates occurred in diesel fuel (26.2 percent), the consumer confidence index (-21.7 percent) and housing starts (-17.5 percent). Changes in the U.S. economy were also seen in the weakening of the U.S. dollar relative to other foreign currencies. For example, exchange rates expressed in units per U. S. dollars indicated the broad index declined to 99.83 in 2008 from 113.63 in 2004, reflecting a decline in the compounded annual growth rate of 3.2 percent. As the dollar continued to weaken relative to foreign currencies, total U. S. exports increased at a compounded annual growth rate of 7.8 percent since 2004. key economic Indicators (billions of 2000 Dollars, unless otherwise noted) 2004 Gross Domestic Product and Components Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Personal Consumption Expenditures Durable Goods Nondurable Goods Services Gross Private Domestic Investment Government Expenditure Trade Balance Total Exports Total Imports Interest Rates (Change in points)1 Prime Rate Federal Funds Rate Manufacturing Indicators Industrial Production Indexes (2002 = 100)1 Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturing (average) Tire Manufacturing (average) Purchasing Managers Index (average)2 2006 2008 Compounded Annual Growth Rate (2004-2008) Assessment $10,675.8 $7,561.4 $1,084.8 $2,177.6 $4,311.0 $1,770.2 $1,931.8 -$593.8 $1,126.1 $1,719.9 4.34% 1.35% $11,294.8 $8,029.0 $1,185.1 $2,335.3 $4,529.9 $1,912.5 $1,971.2 -$615.7 $1,314.8 $1,930.5 7.96% 4.97% $11,671.3 $8,276.2 $1,188.3 $2,381.9 $4,714.8 na $2,071.0 -$388.1 $1,518.6 $1,906.7 5.09% 1.92% 2.3% 2.3% 2.3% 2.3% 2.3% na 1.8% -10.1% 7.8% 2.6% 4.1% 9.2% ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ ¥ na ¥ l l m ¥ ¥ 103.7 102.7 60.5 100.2 96.8 53.9 $3,887 $9,641 4.6% 110.0 1,801 83.1 85.8 45.6 $4,016 $10,637 5.8% 38.6 906 -5.4% -4.4% -6.8% 3.7% 5.2% 1.3% -21.7% -17.5% m m m l l m m m Consumer Information $3,474 Retail Sales (Billions of Current Dollars)3 Disposable Personal Income (Billions of Current Dollars) $8,681 Civilian Unemployment Rate (Change in points)4 5.5% Consumer Confidence Index (for December)5 102.7 Housing Starts (Thousands of Units)3 1,956 Prices4 Producer Price Indexes Total Manufacturing (Dec. 1984 = 100) Diesel Fuel (June 1985 = 100) Consumer Price Indexes (1982-84 = 100) All Items Motor Vehicle Parts and Equipment Exchange Rates (Units per U .S .
