Tool anD equIPMenT afTerMarkeT The tool and equipment segment of the aftermarket includes the tools and equipment used to repair and maintain motor vehicles. End users of this segment’s products include do-it-yourself (DIY) consumers and professional repair shops, with most service technicians purchasing their tools from mobile tool distributors and most repair shops purchasing their equipment from either mobile tool distributors or auto parts jobber stores. Historically, sales in the tool and equipment segment have represented approximately 4.3 percent of total aftermarket sales. Based upon this relationship and the recalibration of the channel forecast model, sales for the tool and equipment segment have been recast resulting in minor changes to previously determined trend lines. The forecast for tool and equipment aftermarket sales reached $9.04 billion in 2008, just 1.1 percent improved over the previous year and marking the sixth consecutive annual increase for this segment of the aftermarket. Repair shops’ purchases of tools remain largely driven by their desire for quality and availability. In 2007, the tool most commonly purchased by repair shops included hand held diagnostic and battery service tools (86.1 percent) and specialty tools (85.0 percent).
