AAIA Factbook 2010 - (Page 5)
afTerMarkeT eMPloyMenT A total of 4.264 million people were employed in the aftermarket in 2008, down for the eighth consecutive year. Since the 2007 level of 4.4 million jobs, the number has dropped 176,000 or approximately 4.0 percent in just one year. Overall, the compounded annual growth rate reflected a 1.0 percent decline in industry employment during the nine year period. Marginal growth rates in employment were experienced in only two of the seven aftermarket sectors including tire dealers (0.5 percent) and automobile dealers (0.1 percent). Negative growth rates in employment were seen in the remaining five of seven categories with the greatest declines in motor vehicle parts manufacturers (4.7 percent) and gasoline stations (1.2 percent). Despite declines in the number of jobs, the average hourly wages for all categories increased during the reporting period from 1999 to 2008 with the strongest gains in automotive parts and accessories stores (2.9 percent), tire stores (2.7 percent) and automotive repair and maintenance (2.7 percent). aftermarket employment Trends (Thousands of Jobs) 1999 Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers (NAICS 3363) Total Employees 837.1 Production Workers 674.2 Production Worker Average Hourly Wage $17.55 2000 839.5 676.7 $17.95 2001 774.7 624.9 $18.22 347.3 $15.00 1,225.1 $17.29 333.4 $11.22 159.7 $12.30 925.3 $8.27 903.9 $12.94 4,669 .4 2002 733.6 590.9 $19.80 345.6 $15.55 1,252.8 $17.74 327.1 $11.43 158.1 $12.47 895.9 $8.56 899.6 $13.31 4,612 .7 2003 707.8 567.6 $20.39 342.1 $15.74 1,254.4 $17.85 321.7 $11.58 158.0 $12.74 882.0 $8.72 894.2 $13.51 4,560 .2 2004 692.1 561.6 $20.43 340.7 $16.08 1,257.3 $17.68 324.5 $11.93 162.0 $12.94 875.6 $8.84 890.6 $13.68 4,542 .8 2005 678.1 553.9 $21.10 344.2 $16.18 1,261.4 $17.85 328.7 $12.29 162.1 $13.57 871.1 $8.92 886.1 $14.11 4,531 .7 2006 654.7 533.7 $21.32 348.3 $16.58 1,246.7 $17.93 327.7 $12.56 166.2 $14.01 864.1 $8.99 886.7 $14.31 4,494 .4 2007 607.9 488.9 $20.84 349.6 $16.52 1,242.2 $17.61 326.7 $12.74 167.8 $14.38 861.5 $9.19 884.6 $14.71 4,440 .3 2008 544.5 431.3 $20.99 338.9 $16.31 1,186.0 $17.13 326.7 $13.18 166.5 $14.51 843.5 $9.46 858.4 $15.24 4,264 .5 Compounded Annual Growth 1999/2008 -4.7% -4.8% 2.0% -0.7% 1.9% 0.1% 0.4% -0.4% 2.9% 0.5% 2.7% -1.2% 2.1% -0.1% 2.7% -1 .0% Motor Vehicles and Parts Wholesalers (NAICS 4231) Total Employees 359.5 355.7 Average Hourly Wage (non-supervisory) $13.81 $14.27 Automobile Dealers (NAICS 4411) Total Employees Average Hourly Wage (non-supervisory) 1,179.7 $16.50 1,216.5 $16.95 Automotive Parts and Accessories Stores (NAICS 44131) Total Employees 337.4 338.6 Average Hourly Wage (non-supervisory) $10.23 $10.67 Tire Dealers (NAICS 44132) Total Employees Average Hourly Wage (non-supervisory) Gasoline Stations (NAICS 447) Total Employees Average Hourly Wage (non-supervisory) 158.5 $11.43 943.5 $7.84 160.0 $11.89 935.7 $8.05 Automotive Repair and Maintenance (NAICS 8111) Total Employees 864.2 888.1 Average Hourly Wage (non-supervisory) $11.97 $12.45 Total Aftermarket Employment Note: Historical data have been revised. 4,679 .9 4,734 .1 Source: U.S. Department of Labor aftermarket employment 5.0 4.8 4.6 4.4 4.2 4.0 4.73 4.68 4.67 4.61 4.56 4.54 4.53 4.49 4.44 4.26 average hourly Wage Trends for selected Categories $20 $18 $16 $14 $12 $10 $8 $6 $4 $2 $0 A Average Hourly Wage A 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Automobile Dealers (NAICS 4411) Automotive Repair and Maintenance (NAICS 8111) Note: Source: Historical data have been revised.
