hybrID vehICles Hybrid vehicles employ technology that uses either an electric motor or the combination of an electric motor and a gasoline engine in place of a traditional gasoline-powered internal combustion engine. Hybrid vehicles provide better fuel economy, reduced emissions and higher mileage than standard powered vehicles. They also require less regular maintenance and run cleaner than other standard powered vehicles. U. S. registrations of hybrid vehicles totaled nearly 1.1 million as of July 1, 2008. The following six states contain almost half (49.5 percent) of the total registrations: California (27.2 percent), Florida (5.0 percent), Texas (4.8 percent), New York (4.7 percent), Virginia (4.1 percent) and Illinois (3.7 percent). In the six years from 2003 to 2008, new registrations totaled 1,144,234. The six most popular models representing 93.4 percent of new vehicle registrations were: Prius (50.4 percent), Civic (14.1 percent), Camry (10.5 percent), Highlander (7.5 percent), Lexus Rx (6.0 percent) and Escape (4.9 percent). hybrid registrations by state Total as of 7/1/08 = 1,099,453 All Other States 38 .0% California 27 .2% Florida 5 .0% Maryland 2 .7% Massachusetts 3 .0% Pennsylvania 3 .2% Washington 3 .5% Illinois 3 .7% Virginia 4 .1% Texas 4 .8% New York 4 .7% Source: R.
